Hundertwasser railway station

The island railway station in Uelzen, designed by the famous architect Hubert Stier, was put into operation in 1887. A century later, the listed Wilhelmine building had come down badly and had lost its old splendour completely.

In the course of the world exhibition EXPO 2000, the specially founded association "Bahnhof 2000 Uelzen e.V." developed a concept which also provided for the redesign of the station into an environmental and cultural station. The Austrian painter and architecture doctor Friedensreich Hundertwasser could be won for the artistic redesign. According to his specifications, the building was rebuilt from 1998 to 2000.

Today the Hundertwasser railway station is one of the ten most beautiful railway stations in the world. Every year thousands of people from all over the world visit the colourful station and enjoy golden balls, colourful mosaics, many colourful columns and dancing windows.

On the river bed floor they experience melodies for their feet, marvel at the drapery of the walls, get to know tree tenants and discover Hundertwasser's fantastic world.
