Wolfstein castle ruins

A historical landmark of the city of Neumarkt that can be seen from afar is the Wolfstein castle ruins. Located 150 meters above Neumarkt, the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1120

It was the ancestral seat of the Wolfstein family, whose last descendant died in the middle of the 18th century and is buried in the crypt of the Sulzbürger church. Except in the Landshut War of Succession at the beginning of the 16th century, the castle was never attacked or destroyed. However, it deteriorated more and more over the decades. In 1997 the Wolfsteinfreunde e. V. with archaeological excavations and conservation measures. The moat, kennel, bower, chapel and box house were scientifically uncovered. The castle is open all year round, but there may be restrictions due to excavation and renovation work. In the summer months the Wolfsteinfreunde offer guided tours on Sundays. Then the 22 meter high keep can also be entered. It offers a wonderful panoramic view over Neumarkt and the surrounding area.
