Walhalla Memorial

At the Walhalla Memorial in Donaustauf in the Bavarian district of Regensburg - originally at the instigation of the Bavarian King Ludwig I - important personalities of the "German tongue" have been honoured with marble busts and commemorative plaques since 1842. It is named after Walhall, the hall of the fallen in Nordic mythology. The architect was Leo von Klenze.

For the opening in 1842, 160 people were honoured with 96 busts and, in cases of missing authentic illustrations or acts such as the Rütlischwur, 64 commemorative plaques. At present the collection comprises 130 busts and 65 commemorative plaques commemorating persons, deeds and groups. Twelve of the honoured are women. Anyone can propose a person to be honoured from the Germanic language family at the earliest 20 years after their death and will then bear the costs for the production and erection of the bust if necessary.
