Kapelle Mariä Verkündigung

When the last remnants of the wall were uncovered during the last renovation, it was confirmed that in the Unterboden district with the graceful chapel dedicated to the Annunciation, the oldest sacred building in Schröcken can be found. In the Warther church chronicle the year 1269 is even noted for the branch "Girsboden" - as the place was called until the 17th century. Since it is assumed that alpine farming had already been carried out here before the arrival of the Walser, such early construction cannot be ruled out. Pastor Jodok Grenßing, who caused the demolition and reconstruction from 1774 to 1778, also described the building as "ancient and believed to be as old as the parish church". After only one path through the ravine to the latter for centuries, the Walsers were probably all the more grateful for this small haven of silent prayer.
