Mall of Berlin

The Wertheim department store on Leipziger Strasse
The Wertheim department store used to be located on the approximately 22,000 square meter site at Leipziger Platz 12 and along Leipziger Strasse. This original building has been called one of the most beautiful department stores in Germany. It was built in a historicist mix of styles by 1906 according to plans by the architect Alfred Messel. It was Europe's largest department store until it was partially destroyed in World War II and then demolished in the GDR era.

The Wertheim ruins were demolished in the 1950s. Until it was completely demolished at the end of May 2005, the vault in the basement and two rooms in the entrance area of the Wertheim Bank on the ground floor of the former department store had been used by the Techno-Club Tresor since 1991. The property of the former department store is from the Arcandor Group to the Wertheim heirs been reassigned, paving the way for redevelopment.

The construction of the mall
After some preliminary project ideas had been shattered, the property with the shopping center and around 270 shops as well as the largest restaurant area (“food court”) in Berlin was built on since spring 2011. In addition, around 30,000 square meters of space for 170 rental apartments and a hotel were accommodated in the building complex. The project was set to cost 800 million euros. The branch mix consists primarily of brand-oriented textile shops and is supplemented by an electronics market. The investors hope that the shopping center will create a new Berlin shopping axis from Potsdamer Platz via Leipziger Platz to Friedrichstrasse.

In the spring of 2012, the ground on the construction site in the area of the tunnel for the U2 subway line below sagged. Subway traffic had to be interrupted for several months for safety reasons. After the foundation stone was laid on August 17, 2012, the August 2013 the topping-out ceremony will be celebrated.
The mall has been open to the public since September 25, 2014. An opening ceremony took place the night before. The "Mall" has 270 shops on more than 76,000 m². This size will only (as of 2015) be surpassed by the Gropius Passagen of the same operator. With the announced expansion in 2017 by 50 shops, the complex would move to the number one shopping center in Berlin, and with its 135,000 m² and then 320 shops, would become the largest shopping center in Germany.
