Lauter'sches Schlösschen

In Schlossstraße, opposite the new town hall, in a small green area stands the oldest professional building in the town. A stone house stood on the same spot as early as 1338. This was the Trimberg farmstead. In 1362, Sanne, the widow of Hermann von Schlüchtern, received this monastic bailiwick from Konrad von Trimberg in fief. Around 1440 it came into the possession of Hans von Lautern. He had his feudal seat rebuilt and extended.
In 1902 it became the property of the city of Schlüchtern. Structural changes became necessary in order to use the upper floor as the mayor's official residence. The first floor accommodated the Weitzel library. With the end of the Second World War, the American occupation forces occupied the castle. In 1947/48 it served as the seat of the Spruchkammer for denazification of former party members. It also housed the office of the European Academy until 1951. The library of the Amerika-Haus was also housed in the Schlösschen. Rebuilt in 1970/71, it has housed the "Bergwinkel Museum" as the local history museum of the city of Schlüchtern since that time.
