Burg Brandenstein

The more than 750-year-old facility owned by the von Brandenstein-Zeppelin family is located on a mountain spur made of shell limestone a little off the Kinzig valley above Schluechtern.
Located in the midst of species-rich mixed deciduous forests, the view from the Burgberg opens up over the foothills of the Rhön and Spessart. The Vogelsberg also approaches with its foothills from the northwest, which is why the area around Schluechtern is also called "Bergwinkel".
Among others, Ottilie von Eberstein grew up in the castle, the mother of the famous poet and humanist Ulrich von Hutten, who was born in 1488 in the neighboring castle of Steckelberg.
The medieval fortifications, destroyed in 1522 during the "Eberstein feud", were rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century as a castle-like Renaissance complex.
In 1895, the von Brandenstein family bought the castle, ran a forestry business and planted a large orchard, which today is used as a natural orchard primarily for the production of Brandenstein's organic apple juice.
The courtyard is open to the public and is used for all sorts of interesting and original events. Guided tours on the topics of “Castle History”, “Wooden Equipment Museum”, “Japanese Siebold Collection” and “Garden and Landscape” are available by arrangement.
Under the title "Historical life, work and enjoyment at Brandenstein Castle", the bailiff Uwe Kretschmann offers workshops on historical handicraft activities, such as beer brewing, distilling schnapps, fence weaving or keeping goats, as well as rustic celebrations from company outings to children's birthday parties.
At the "robber baron seminar" groups can have fun and compete in ancient exercises such as jousting or horseshoe throwing.
