Walsrode Monastery

The monastery Walsrode is located at Kirchplatz 2 in Walsrode, The monastery Walsrode is surrounded by an old brick wall from the 18th century and is located in the middle of the lively heath city, centrally between the two shopping streets "Lange Straße" and "Moorstraße". When the visitor steps through the wrought-iron gate, an impressive place of peace and pause awaits him with the harmonious baroque buildings and the well-tended park. With its thousand-year history, the monastery is the oldest of the six Lüneburg monasteries, founded as a canoness monastery before 986 AD by Count Wale and his wife Odelinth.  Today it continues in a living tradition as a convent for ladies, whose conventuals devote themselves to social, honorary and cultural tasks. During a one-hour guided tour, the convent ladies introduce visitors to the history, architectural features and cultural treasures of the convent, such as the "Bambino", a 500-year-old Christ doll, a carved depiction of the Last Supper, a reliquary with a garden of paradise, medieval stained glass windows with coats of arms and the abbess chair. However, the monastery not only invites visitors to get acquainted with its historical treasures, but also offers various events during the season from April to October. These include the popular concerts in the chapel, exhibitions and lectures.
