Deutsche Oper am Rhein

From a poetic point of view, it is the Rhine that connects the Düsseldorf Opera House and the Theater in Duisburg. In practical life, it is theatre buses, transporters and articulated lorries that travel between the two locations of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, bringing artists, costumes and scenery to the place where the next rehearsal or performance takes place. Since its foundation in 1956, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein has existed as a theatre community. Comparable stage dimensions allow the opera and ballet productions to be shown both in the Düsseldorf Opera House and in the Theater der Stadt Duisburg.

The Düsseldorf Opera House on Heinrich-Heine-Allee has an attractive location on the edge of the old town, directly between Hofgarten and Königsallee, and is within walking distance of the Rhine promenade.

The new municipal theatre was opened here in 1875 according to plans by the architect Ernst Giese. The building, which is based on the Italian Renaissance style with its round front building and 1,260 seats, was similar to other representative theatre buildings such as the Semper Opera House in Dresden.
