Andreas church

The Andreaskirche in Düsseldorf's Old Town: It is worth visiting this most important testimony to early Baroque architecture (consecration: 1629) in the region under expert guidance. In addition to its architecture and the wonderful picture programme, the former court church of the Palatinate-Neuburg Wittelsbach offers insights into the history of the city of Düsseldorf and the Christian religion.

The former Court and Jesuit Church of St. Andreas in the heart of Düsseldorf's old town - together with the Court Church in Neuburg a.d. Donau - is one of the "most interesting buildings of the outgoing German Renaissance and the beginning Baroque" (S. Schürmann). The Andreaskirche, which is important in terms of urban and art history, was built on the initiative of the Jesuits who were called to Düsseldorf in 1619. Under Duke Wolfgang Wilhelm from the House of Pfalz-Neuburg, the church was completed in the middle of the Thirty Years' War in a very short time (1622-1629). Until the dissolution of the Jesuit Order in 1773, Saint Andreas remained a monastery church; in 1842 it was finally elevated to parish church status. In 1972 the Dominicans moved their Düsseldorf convent from Herzogstraße to the old town and since then have taken over the pastoral care of the Andreaskirche. Today, the Andreaskirche is owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
