Schleusingen Museum of Natural History

Bertholdsburg Castle - the most important secular building in southern Thuringia - is the landmark of the town of Schleusingen on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest.
The castle was built between 1226 and 1232 under Poppo VII of Henneberg. After the great division of the county of Henneberg in 1274, it was the seat and residence of the counts of Henneberg, the Schleusingen line, for more than three centuries.
In 1583, the last count of Henneberg, Georg Ernst, died without male descendants.
From this time onwards, the former residence became more and more the administrative seat, first of Saxon, then after 1815 of Prussian offices and authorities. In the 20th century, Bertholdsburg Castle began to be used as a museum. Today, the exhibitions of the Natural History Museum allow visitors to tour the north, east and west wings of Bertholdsburg Castle.
